Rain is the first thing anyone tells you about Keelung. It falls two days in three, and the city has been called the rain port for a century without sounding sorry about it. The harbour comes into the middle of town, close enough that cruise ships tie up a street from the shops. Eat at the Miaokou night market, built around a temple under hundreds of yellow lanterns, where the stalls are numbered and some have run in one family for three generations. Walk out to Zhengbin, an old fishing harbour from the Japanese period whose houses were painted in blocks of flat colour and now sit doubled in the water. Cross to Heping Island, where wind has cut the sandstone into mushrooms and honeycomb, and where the Spanish landed in 1626 to build the first fort on this coast.
