Takachiho is where the story is set: a gorge where the Gokase river has cut a slot through welded ash from Aso's eruptions, leaving columns of basalt eighty metres high that you row a rented boat between. Down the coast at Aoshima, walk a shoreline ribbed with parallel ridges of rock — seven million years of seabed tilted up and planed off by the waves, called the devil's washboard here. Further south at Cape Toi, a herd of horses has lived loose on the headland since the seventeenth century and is now a protected natural monument. For a couple of decades after the war this coast was where Japanese couples honeymooned, and the palm trees along the Nichinan road were planted for them.
