In 1616 a Korean potter found the right stone in the hills at Arita, and within a few decades the kilns were shipping through the port at Imari to Europe, where the plates ended up on the walls of palaces. Older by far: walk Yoshinogari, a moated Yayoi settlement of watchtowers and pit dwellings covering more than a hundred hectares, lived in for some seven centuries before anyone in Japan was writing anything down. Along the bay at Karatsu, follow a black pine forest planted as a windbreak four and a half kilometres long. And every November, watch about a hundred hot-air balloons lift off the Kase river at dawn — the largest gathering of its kind in Asia.
