More hot water comes out of the ground here than anywhere else in Japan — something like 4,400 separate sources, over half of them in Beppu alone, a town of a hundred thousand people sitting on top of them with steam rising out of the streets. Some of that water is not for bathing. The hells are pools you go to look at: one opaque red from iron in the clay, another cobalt blue, charging admission to stand and stare long before anyone called it tourism. Inland at Yufuin, look up at the cone of Yufu-dake standing over the town. Out on the Kunisaki peninsula, walk to Buddhas carved directly into cliff faces, some eight centuries old and still in the rock they were cut from, and at Usuki, sixty more carved into a volcanic tuff hillside and made National Treasures in 1995.
