Daejeon is where Korea does its thinking — a railway junction that became the country's science city, home to the Daedeok research campus, KAIST, and the 1993 World Expo, whose Hanbit Tower still stands over the park like a rocket waiting to go. The city jokes that there is nothing to see here, and leans in far enough to put it on the posters. Walk Gyejoksan's red-clay path, 14.5 kilometres round, barefoot like everyone else — and in the rain by preference, because that is when the clay is right. Look up through Jangtaesan's metasequoias, tall enough that the walkway had to be built into the canopy. Follow the five-hundred-ri trail along Daecheongho east of the city, soak at Yuseong, a hot-spring town long before the laboratories arrived, and climb Bomunsan for the whole lit grid after dark.
