Walk up the valley to Hengifoss, which falls 128 metres past red bands of clay laid down between lava flows. On the coast at Stokksnes the black sand goes out flat under Vestrahorn, a mountain that photographers drive across the country for. Then the fjord villages — eggs carved in stone at Djúpivogur, puffins close enough to touch at Borgarfjörður eystri, and reindeer, which live nowhere else on the island.
