Horse country, and the only part of Iceland where the horses outnumber the people. The valley opens out at Skagafjörður into flat green pasture between two rivers, and in autumn the herds come down off the highland in a drive that half the district turns out for. This is saga ground as well: Grettir the Outlaw spent his last three years on Drangey, the flat-topped island standing alone in the middle of the fjord, and swam ashore to a hot spring at Reykir that still bears his name and is still warm. Along the coast the swimming pool at Hofsós is built at the edge of the water so that the lane you are in appears to run straight into the fjord. West of that, on the Vatnsnes peninsula, seals lie on the rocks and a basalt stack called Hvítserkur stands in the surf with two holes worn through its feet, which the old stories explain as a troll caught out by the sunrise.
