The oldest rock in Iceland and the least-visited corner of it — a hand of fjords hanging off the northwest, joined to the rest of the country by a neck of land a few kilometres wide, on roads that are mostly gravel and half shut in winter. Dynjandi comes down the mountainside in tiers like a veil, and you climb past six smaller falls to reach it. At Látrabjarg the cliffs run fourteen kilometres and rise more than four hundred metres, and the puffins on them have never learned to be afraid of people, which is why every photograph of one lying on its front at the cliff edge was taken here. The sand at Rauðasandur runs red and gold for ten kilometres, which is not what anyone expects of an Icelandic beach. North of that the road ends and Hornstrandir begins, emptied of its farms in the 1950s and left to arctic foxes that walk right up to you. Then Djúpavík, where a herring factory has stood rusting since 1954 with a hotel in the old workers' dormitory.
